Grade 7 Dividing Rational Numbers

Dividing signed rational numbers in grade 7: integers, decimals and mixed numbers with the sign rules in play. Twenty problems plus a full key.

CCSSAligned to Common Core 7.NS.2: Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers, including converting a rational number to a decimal using long division.

What this worksheet covers

There are twenty division problems here, on one printable page, with the worked answer key on the second. Sixteen of the twenty problems involve a negative quantity, so the answer is not always larger than what went in; several problems use mixed numbers, which have to be handled without dropping the whole-number part. The whole sheet sits inside Common Core 7.NS.2, in the grade 7 The Number System strand.

Skills practiced

Grade 7 sits in the stretch of the division progression concerned with signed rational numbers, unit rates, and orders of magnitude. Working the page asks a student to work in fractional units and simplify the result, keep decimal points aligned rather than right-aligning digits out of habit, and track direction as well as magnitude. The sheet is doing its job when the student can work it without hesitating.

How to use this worksheet

Have the student estimate before computing, then compare. At this level an answer that is wildly off should announce itself, and building that reflex matters as much as the twenty answers themselves. If more than a third of the page comes back wrong, stop and go back a step rather than assigning another sheet like it.

One mistake to watch for

The dividend and divisor are reversed: 3 ÷ 12 is computed as 12 ÷ 3.

Division is assumed to always take the larger number first, an assumption that held for every problem the student has seen.

Read the expression aloud in the order written and attach a story. Word problems where the answer is genuinely less than one make the difference impossible to ignore.
