Mixed Operationsโ€ขGrade 3

Grade 3 Mixed Operations Practice

All four operations on a single grade 3 page, so the first job is spotting which sign is in front of you. Twenty problems with a complete answer key.

CCSSAligned to Common Core 3.OA.7: Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division; know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
20 problemsAnswer key included

Check the sign in each problem before you work. All four operations appear on this page.

What this worksheet covers

This is a 20-problem sheet โ€” one page to work through, one page of answers to check against. What makes this set particular: six of the ten straight computations require regrouping and the rest do not, so the two cases are mixed rather than blocked together; numbers reach 838. Grade 3, Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Common Core 3.OA.7: that is the exact slot this page fills.

Skills practiced

At this point in the sequence, work in mixed operations is really about all four operations, and choosing among them. Concretely, the page tests whether a student can carry or borrow across place-value columns without losing a digit. Watch how the answers are reached, not just whether they land โ€” the method is what carries into grade 4.

How to use this worksheet

By grade 3 a student should be able to take all twenty problems in one sitting. Time it loosely โ€” if the page takes more than about fifteen minutes, the underlying facts are probably not automatic yet, and that is worth fixing before more mixed operations practice piles on top. Print a second copy before writing on the first; a sheet worked twice a week apart tells you far more than a sheet worked once.

One mistake to watch for

Division before multiplication regardless of position: 24 รท 4 ร— 2 is answered as 3.

PEMDAS is being read as six ordered steps, putting multiplication ahead of division.

Teach the four-level hierarchy with multiplication and division sharing a level, evaluated left to right, and drill it on expressions where the difference shows.
