What this worksheet covers
Twenty addition problems fill the page, and the complete key sits behind them in the same PDF. Every problem is set in a short real-world situation, so the first decision is which operation the situation calls for; answers carry units, and a number without its unit is only half an answer. The whole sheet sits inside Common Core 3.MD.1, in the grade 3 Measurement & Data strand.
Skills practiced
Grade 3 sits in the stretch of the addition progression concerned with the standard algorithm with regrouping. Working the page asks a student to read a situation and choose an operation before computing. Consistency across the page matters more than any single answer on it.
How to use this worksheet
Give this one uninterrupted. At grade 3, work in addition is where procedure and recall have to run at the same time, and a page done in fragments hides which of the two is the problem. Date the sheet before filing it. A page from six weeks ago is the cheapest evidence you have that something is sticking.
One mistake to watch for
Counting all instead of counting on: for 7 + 3, the student starts at one.
Cardinality has not fully transferred — the student does not yet trust that "seven" names the whole set and can be the starting point.
Hide the first set under a cup, label it with the numeral, and count on from there. When the set cannot be counted, counting on is the only option available.
